1937 SS Columbus of the North German Lloyd Ship Line Easter Cruise to West Indies From New York

SS Columbus

The SS Columbus was a German ocean liner built for the Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) shipping company. She was launched in 1928 and entered service in 1929. The Columbus was one of the largest and most luxurious liners in the world at the time of her construction. She was designed to accommodate 1,900 passengers and had a crew of 800. The Columbus sailed on the transatlantic route between Bremen, Germany, and New York City.

Easter Cruise to West Indies

In 1937, the Columbus was chartered by the NDL for an Easter cruise to the West Indies. The cruise departed from New York City on March 28 and visited the islands of Bermuda, Barbados, Trinidad, CuraƧao, and Jamaica. The cruise was a great success and the Columbus was praised for her comfort and luxury. The Columbus continued to sail on the transatlantic route until the outbreak of World War II in 1939. She was then converted into a troopship and served in the German Navy during the war.
