The Netherlands: A Brief Introduction
Wedged between the North Sea and Germany, the Netherlands is a small yet densely populated country in Northwestern Europe. These two provinces make up the region commonly referred to as Holland, which is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the entire country.
Holland and Its Provinces
The term "Holland" has its origins in the 11th century, when it referred to the area around the North Sea coastline. Over time, Holland became synonymous with the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands, which existed from 1581 to 1795. Today, Holland remains the name for the two provinces of North Holland and South Holland, which lie in the western part of the country.
