Canada, Despite Defeat, Showed They Belong On The Pitch With World's Best
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Lionel Messi scored twice to help Argentina defeat Canada 2-0 in the opening game of the 2024 Copa América on Tuesday.
Messi opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a low shot from inside the area. He doubled Argentina's lead in the 52nd minute, getting on the end of a cross from Ángel Di María and heading the ball into the net.
Canada had a few chances to score, but they could not find the back of the net. Alphonso Davies had the best chance for Canada, but his shot was saved by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Argentina is now the favorite to win the Copa América, and they will be looking to add to their record-breaking 15 titles.
